Common question: „Drying takes me forever after a wash and I always end up with water spots, no matter how many towels I go through — is there a towel that actually works fast and doesn't leave streaks?"
Yes — and the Meguiar's SUPREME Drying Towel Extra Large is the answer. This drying towel in extra-large format is built for fast, streak-free drying after a wash. The towel is generously sized and made from high-pile microfibre that pulls water off the paint instead of pushing it around. Instead of the usual back-and-forth with a stack of soaked towels, one pass with the SUPREME Drying Towel XL is enough to get the whole body dry on a normal-sized car. The real difference against cheaper drying towels comes down to material density: the deep pile and thickness of the SUPREME towel hold huge amounts of water without wringing — that saves time, is kinder to the paint and leaves a streak-free finish. At 29.90 euros it's no luxury item, but the step up from supermarket microfibre is obvious on every single wash.
Day-to-day from Detailing1: Don't drag the SUPREME Drying Towel XL across the paint — blot instead: lay the towel on the wet panel, press down briefly, then lift it off — the pile drinks the water without you pulling the towel over the paint. On bigger panels like the bonnet or the roof, combine that with flat, overlapping wipes. Only give the towel a quick shake out when you notice it genuinely slowing down — that stretches its capacity per job a long way.
Drying after the wash is the underrated step in car care. Plenty of drivers just grab whatever's to hand — an old cotton towel, the cheapest microfibre on the shelf or even a discount-store chamois. The result: water spots from patchy drying, visible wipe marks from harsh material, or streaks because the water flashed off in the sun before the towel got there. All of that is largely avoidable with the right drying towel.
The SUPREME Drying Towel XL solves it through the way it's built: the deep microfibre pile holds all the water off a normal car wash without you ever having to wring it out. That heads off the classic drying problem — spreading water instead of lifting it, which is what happens once a towel is saturated. With the SUPREME towel XL you always have reserve left; the towel is still drinking at the end of the session.
The other thing that matters is how hard the material is. Not every microfibre towel is equally soft — cheap towels can go stiff through poor fibre quality or the wrong wash routine and leave microscopic scratches in the clear coat. The SUPREME Drying Towel XL uses a microfibre grade that stays soft long-term and is safe on paint — even after a lot of wash cycles, as long as you look after it.
On dark cars this counts double: on black or deep-blue paint, wipe marks and drying streaks jump out in the right light and need a polish or a quick detailer to get rid of. With the SUPREME towel XL and decent technique that extra work never comes up. Wash and dry regularly and you'll notice it fast: a good towel doesn't just cut the drying time, it cuts the fixing-up time afterwards — because the result is right from the start.
Best case: blow the car off with a dryer or compressed air after the wash — that step alone takes 60–70 % of the surface water off before the towel goes anywhere near the paint. The towel then stops being the main drying tool and becomes the finishing tool. It stretches the towel's capacity a long way and the result gets better. No blower? At least wipe the standing puddles off the horizontal panels before you start the full pass.
The drying pass: start at the roof — top down, so run-off doesn't re-wet panels you've already done. Lay the towel on the paint, press lightly with your flat hand, then draw it off in one even wipe. The blotting technique (lay on, press, lift) works especially well on horizontals like the bonnet and roof. On verticals like doors and wings, guide the towel gently downwards to walk the water towards the rain gutter.
Trouble spots: door shuts, mirrors, boot lid edges and sills hold a lot of leftover water that runs out as soon as you move the car and re-wets panels you just dried. Blot those areas carefully with a corner of the towel before you move the car. Or: after drying, roll the car forward a bit so the trapped water runs out, then go over it again briefly. That extra step saves you the annoying water spot on the tailgate at your next stop.
One last thing: don't dry windows and glass with the same towel as the paint — the SUPREME Drying Towel XL is built for bodywork and paint. For glass we'd reach for a dedicated glass towel like the PERFECT CLARITY Glass Towel, which is made for streak-free windows and has a different microfibre structure for glass.
The SUPREME Drying Towel Extra Large and the WATER MAGNET Drying Towel are both proper Meguiar's drying towels, but they're built differently and used differently. The WATER MAGNET runs a waffle-weave structure that channels water very effectively and shines with the sliding technique — pulling the towel across the paint. The SUPREME Drying Towel XL has a classic long microfibre pile that suits the blotting technique and sensitive, freshly polished paint.
If your car has fresh polish or a sealant on it and you want the gentlest possible drying, the SUPREME Drying Towel XL is your towel — the soft pile keeps the risk of wipe marks down. If you want speed and you're comfortable with the sliding technique, the WATER MAGNET is the quicker option. The two work well side by side for a complete drying routine: the SUPREME towel for delicate polished paint, the WATER MAGNET for a quick dry after the everyday wash.
Against the cheap stuff from the DIY store or the discounter, the SUPREME Drying Towel XL is an investment that pays back in daily use: fewer water spots, no wringing, no risk of wipe marks from second-rate material. For 29.90 euros you get a towel that keeps delivering on a daily driver.
Wash the towel after every use, or at least rinse it out cold — water residue with limescale or detergent left in it can affect the microfibre structure for good. For the machine, use a mild, soap-free detergent with no fabric softener — softener sits in the microfibre and kills the absorbency. Wash temperature: 40°C max, no high-speed spin. Don't tumble-dry it, heat damages the fibres — hang it up to air-dry.
Big one: never wash the towel together with cotton towels or clothing that has cups, buttons or zips on it. Those hard bits chew up the fine microfibre in the machine. Best case, all your microfibre goes in on its own — it adds a lot of life and keeps them soft and thirsty long-term.
Signs it's on the way out: the towel clearly drinks less than it did new, even with careful care. The fibre feels stiff or scratchy as you go over the paint. That's when it's time for a new one — a worn drying towel works less efficiently and can leave marks in sensitive clear coat. Looked after properly though, the SUPREME Drying Towel XL lasts a lot longer than the cheap alternatives. Rule of thumb: a good microfibre towel gives you 50 to 100 uses with sensible handling and a gentle wash before performance drops off noticeably. Wash your car weekly and you'll want a new towel every one to two years — which works out at a very low price per use.
The SUPREME Drying Towel Extra Large is sized for big panels and gives you far more surface than a standard towel. The extra-large size lets you dry several panels in one go, which speeds the job up and cuts the number of passes per panel.
Not on a normal car wash — the towel is big and thirsty enough to dry a whole car without wringing. On very large vehicles or a particularly wet job, one quick shake out (not a wring) may be needed.
The towel is built for bodywork and paint. For glass we'd reach for a separate, glass-specific towel, because glass needs a different microfibre structure for streak-free results.
40°C max, mild soap-free detergent, no fabric softener. Wash it separately from cotton textiles or clothing with metal parts. Air-dry, no tumble dryer.
The SUPREME towel has a long microfibre pile for gentle blotting on delicate paint. The WATER MAGNET uses a waffle-weave structure for fast, efficient sliding. Both are quality towels — pick by the drying technique you prefer.
Not sure about Meguiars SUPREME Drying Towel Extra Large Microfibre Drying Towel? Get it explained:
The SUPREME Drying Towel Extra Large is designed for large vehicle sections and offers significantly more surface area than standard towels. The extra-large size allows you to dry multiple body panels in one pass, which speeds up the work and reduces the number of passes per area.
Not during normal car washing — the towel is large and absorbent enough to completely dry a vehicle without wringing. For very large vehicles or particularly wet situations, a single brief shake (not wringing) may be necessary.
The towel is optimized for bodywork and paint. For glass surfaces, we recommend a separate special towel specifically designed for glass, as glass surfaces require a different microfiber structure for streak-free results.
Maximum 40°C, mild soap-free detergent, no fabric softener. Wash separately from cotton textiles or clothing with metal parts. Air dry, do not tumble dry.
The SUPREME Towel has a long microfiber pile for a gentle blotting technique on sensitive paint finishes. The WATER MAGNET uses a waffle-weave structure for fast, efficient sliding drying. Both are high-quality — the choice depends on your preferred drying technique.
