When do you need a dedicated care sponge?

Plastic, rubber and leather care products have a different consistency than polishes or waxes — they're often thinner and soak quickly into open-pored surfaces. A sponge that's too dense won't even pick the product up; one that's too porous lets it straight through and spreads it unevenly. The Koch-Chemie Sponge has the right porosity for exactly this product class: it picks up the care product evenly and releases it in a controlled way as you lay it down — no drips on the floor, no heavy build-up in one spot. For exterior plastic parts — bumpers, door trim, mirror housings, underbody guards — the sponge is the fastest and cleanest way to apply care products. Inside, it works well on dashboard plastics, door cards and the rubber seals around the doors.

How to use it for plastic, rubber and leather care

Put the care product on the sponge — never spray it straight onto the surface, since overspray on glass or paint is a pain to remove. Lay it down on the plastic or rubber with even pressure. For heavily textured surfaces (say a bumper with deep grain), work the sponge in with a touch more pressure so the product reaches into every recess. After a short dwell, wipe the excess off with a dry microfibre cloth. For leather care: put the product on the sponge, work it into the leather grain in circles, then let it dry. Rinse the sponge out after use and let it dry — don't let care product residue dry into the foam.

Sponge alongside the Puck — the right applicators for every job

Koch-Chemie offers two applicators for different jobs: the hand polishing sponge "Puck" (77 × 47 mm) for thicker products like hand wax and for hand polishing, and this sponge (12 × 10 × 5 cm) for thin to medium-viscosity care products and care milks. The sponge has a bigger working face and is more efficient for getting through large plastic areas fast; the Puck is grippier and better for focused detail work. Day-to-day from Detailing1: When you're dressing black plastic trim and bumpers, we'd dust the surface down with a dry microfibre cloth first, then lay the care product on with the sponge. Don't go heavy in one go — better two thin coats than one thick one. Lift any excess off glass or paint straight away while it's still wet — dried-on plastic dressing on glass is stubborn.

Which care products go with the Koch-Chemie Sponge?

The sponge suits all Koch-Chemie plastic, rubber and leather care products — especially medium to lower-viscosity ones like plastic care milk, rubber care sprays (spray onto the sponge first) and leather care lotions. Not recommended for very thick products like high-concentration leather waxes or polishes — for those the Puck is the better pick.

At 12 × 10 × 5 cm it's especially efficient on large plastic areas like bumpers and wheel arch liners, where a small applicator would need way too many passes.
