Piano black picks up swirls, the dashboard throws glare
Two customers asked us the same thing within days of each other: is our all-purpose cleaner safe on piano black? Fair question, and it runs deeper than it sounds. Every modern cockpit has two surfaces sitting right next to each other that want the exact opposite treatment. Treat them the same and you lose one of them. Usually both.
The big surface in the cockpit has to stay low-reflection, otherwise it mirrors into the windscreen when the light comes in flat. The piano black trim next to it is meant to shine. Both take the same mild cleaner, but they need different towels and a different second step.
Piano black is a coated plastic trim, not body paint
Piano black in a car is a high-gloss coated plastic part, usually on the centre console, door pulls, control panel and screen surrounds. The glossy layer sits on an injection-moulded carrier and is far thinner than the clear coat on the body.
Everything else follows from that. On the bonnet you have several tenths of a millimetre of clear coat, and a polish has room to work in it. On the trim you are working on a coating that gives you no second attempt. The same pass that leaves the paint untouched puts a visible nest of scratches in here. The panel is also small, heavily curved, and sits between parts made of completely different material, which limits machine work even further.
Then there is the colour. The trim is nearly always deep black, and black shows defects without mercy. On a light, grained plastic surface a fine scratch disappears into the scattered light. On black gloss it turns into a bright line, because ambient light scatters off the torn edge while the rest of the panel mirrors. So the contrast does not come from how deep the scratch is, it comes from the difference between a mirroring and a scattering surround.
Staying honest is part of this: manufacturers do not publish the exact layer build-ups, and they differ between model ranges. What matters in practice is not in dispute and you can check it on the car. It is a thin, soft, glossy layer on plastic. Treat it like body paint and you overestimate it. Treat it like the grained dashboard and you underestimate it.
In practice that means the trim is a part you clean, and if you must, carefully polish, but never dress. It takes nothing in; it has no open structure for anything to sink into. Any product left sitting on it is a film that shows fingerprints better than before. That sets it apart from the grained surface next to it, which is built to take something in.
One cockpit carries two gloss levels and they sit far apart
Gloss in vehicle engineering is not a matter of taste, it is a measured value. It is recorded in gloss units to DIN EN ISO 2813, with a reflectometer firing light at the surface at a defined angle and measuring the directed reflection.
The standard knows three measuring geometries, and the choice alone tells you how far apart these two surfaces are. Sixty degrees is the standard angle for mid gloss. If a surface comes in under ten units there, you switch to eighty-five degrees, because the flatter angle is what makes matte surfaces distinguishable in the first place. Above seventy units you switch to twenty degrees, the high-gloss angle. Carmakers' own standards routinely pin the upper instrument panel well below five units. The piano black trim next to it lives in the twenty-degree range. These are not two shades of the same finish, they are two ends of the same scale.
The reason for the hard limit on the big surface is the windscreen. In modern cars it is steeply raked, often under thirty degrees to horizontal. When low sun hits a glossy dashboard, the light gets thrown up onto the inside of the glass, and glass reflects more and transmits less as the angle flattens. What you get is veiling glare: the mirror image of the cockpit lays itself as a bright layer over whatever is happening outside. Contrast drops, and dark objects at the edge of the road are the first to go.
Anyone who set off before sunrise this morning for the partial lunar eclipse had exactly that light: flat from the front, half dark, almost no contrast outside. That is the moment that decides whether your dashboard is standing in the glass or not. A silicone-oil dressing fills the fine grain of the surface with a continuous oil film. The scattering structure turns into a flat mirror, and the gloss value the factory set walks straight over to where it has no business being.

Mild chemistry is the only thing both surfaces share
When it comes to product choice there is exactly one thing the gloss trim and the matte dashboard have in common: neither takes a harsh cleaner. Everything else differs, from the towel to the second step.
The most common mistake comes out of the wash bay. People wipe the whole interior down with glass cleaner because it is cheap and flashes off fast. Depending on the formula, glass cleaner carries a serious alcohol content, and alcohol is a good solvent. It does not just lift the grease film, it also pulls plasticisers out of the plastic matrix. Anyone who has touched older switchgear knows the result: soft-touch coating that goes sticky. On screens and coated surfaces the same cleaner is the fastest way to wreck an anti-reflective layer.
The number you can rely on is not on the bottle, it is in the safety data sheet. The Meguiars "ALL SURFACE" Interior Cleaner is listed there at pH 7 to 8 and fully water soluble. That is the neutral window where neither the coating on the trim nor the plasticisers in the dashboard get attacked. The matte surface gets a second step after cleaning; the trim does not. It brings antistatic properties with it, and that is the real day-to-day benefit: interior plastic is a good insulator, it charges up with every bit of friction, and dust sticks to it. On piano black, though, this product has nothing to do. The trim does not need dressing, it needs to be clean.
Dust off first, then damp, never dry across the gloss
The order decides the result, not the product. Wipe a dusty gloss panel and you are polishing with the dust you meant to remove, and you create exactly the swirls you complain about afterwards.
Interior dust is not soft fluff. It carries mineral particles from outside, and those are harder than any coating in the car. Drag a towel over the trim with pressure behind it and they work like the finest sandpaper. On the matte surface the same thing happens invisibly: there abrasion grinds the grain flat over the years and the panel goes shiny where hands land. That is why armrests and console edges gleam in older cars while the panel next to them stayed matte.
So the first step is low-contact. Vacuum with a soft brush nozzle, run a soft interior brush along edges and seams, and only then bring moisture into it. The cleaner never goes straight onto the surface, it goes onto the towel. Sprayed direct, part of the mist lands as overspray on the inside of the glass and on the screens, where it stays as a smeary film and scatters against the light. Going via the towel costs two seconds and saves you cleaning the glass afterwards.
On piano black you work damp, with very little pressure and in straight passes rather than circles. The weight is not a marketing figure, it is a selection aid. 300 GSM means a thin, dense towel that lays onto the surface and leaves little material between your hand and the trim. For the matte surface the thrift runs the other way. One to three sprays of dressing, so roughly one to three millilitres, cover half a dashboard or a door card. Anything beyond that the plastic cannot take in, it sits there as a film, goes patchy and grabs dust. After a few minutes of flash-off you take the excess back with a dry towel and no pressure, and it is that step that makes the finish even.

That leaves the tools. Short-pile edgeless microfibre for the trim, a second dry towel to follow up, a soft brush for edges and switch surrounds. If the trim already carries swirls, add a finishing polish. How often all this comes round depends less on the product than on where the car lives. A car parked in the sun every day loses the effect faster than one in an underground garage, because heat and UV load break the dressing down. For daily drivers a sensible rhythm is about four weeks; for garage and seasonal cars one or two top-ups a year are plenty. The trim follows no interval at all, it gets cleaned when the fingerprints start to bother you.
When the trim shows swirls, when the cockpit goes greasy
Both surfaces fail visibly, but in opposite directions. So the diagnosis is simple: where light scatters and should not, you have swirls. Where it mirrors and should not, you have too much dressing.
When the trim shows a fine web of scratches in raking light, cleaning will not fix it any more. Then you work by hand with very little polish on a soft applicator, in short passes, no pressure, with a test spot somewhere out of the way. Edges and curves get left out, because that is where pressure peaks and the thin layer suffers first. If you reach for a machine, use a small polisher and low speed. Afterwards the panel is clear, but it stays every bit as sensitive as it was. Create friction and you create holograms and scratches, and no polish changes that physics.
When the dashboard goes greasy and shiny instead, the cause is almost always product that was put there, not dirt. Then you take it back with the mild cleaner first and dress sparingly afterwards, rather than laying more product on top of the existing film.
If a milky haze shows up on the inside of the glass on top of that, a second mechanism has joined in. At cockpit temperatures that can climb to 90 to 120 degrees behind the glass in summer, plasticisers and volatile components gas out of the plastic and settle on the cooler glass. Carmakers test this fogging behaviour to DIN 75201, and overspray from dressing applied too generously lays itself on as a second layer.
Two things belong in here honestly. First: a gloss trim cannot be kept scratch-free, only scratch-poor. Expect that and you will be happier than if you expect perfect. Second: nothing goes on the steering wheel rim, the shifter or the pedal faces, neither dressing nor polish, however matte the product is. Those parts need grip, and a foot slipping off the brake pedal is a different calibre of problem than a shiny bit of trim.
