Alkaline concentrate for engine, interior, and pre-wash

Teufels-Reiniger is TUGA Chemie's highly alkaline universal cleaner with a pH of 10.5 to 11.8 — a sledgehammer for engine oil, chain grease, nicotine film, and diesel soot. Tetrapotassium pyrophosphate binds water hardness, sodium alkane sulfonate provides heavy-duty cleaning power, and sodium metasilicate buffers the pH value. Dilutable up to 1:10 — a 5-liter canister yields 55 liters of ready-to-use solution. Maximum contact time is strictly 3 minutes — drying metasilicates create APC spots.

Dilute concentrate appropriately — 1:5 for engine bay, 1:10 for workshop floor, 1:20 for interior, 1:30 for light maintenance. Transfer to spray bottle with distilled or low-lime water. Spray onto a COOL surface from 20-30 cm away. STRICTLY observe 3 minutes dwell time, never longer — drying metasilicates will etch the clear coat. Remove thoroughly with high-pressure cleaner or damp cloth. Dispose of in accordance with AVV, not household waste. Safety glasses + nitrile gloves mandatory.

Car All-Purpose Cleaner: Teufels-Reiniger alkaline for grease, oil, and nicotine film

What is Teufels-Reiniger? A highly alkaline all-purpose cleaner from TUGA Chemie GmbH with a pH value of 10.5 to 11.8 — specifically designed for saponifying organic fats, oils, nicotine film, and diesel soot. The formulation is based on tetrapotassium pyrophosphate as a complexing agent, sodium alkane sulfonate as an anionic heavy-duty surfactant, trideceth-9 as a non-ionic co-surfactant, and sodium metasilicate as an alkaline builder. Dilutable up to 1:10, ready-to-use in a 1-liter container. Maximum contact time strictly 3 minutes — drying metasilicates cause irreversible etching ("APC spots"). Strictly unsuitable for genuine leather, Alcantara, unprotected aluminum, and hot glass fiber fabric.

Teufels-Reiniger® is TUGA Chemie GmbH's industrial all-purpose cleaner, positioned as a "sledgehammer" between end-consumer convenience and brute industrial chemistry. The formulation builds on a classic, powerful APC profile: Tetrapotassium pyrophosphate binds calcium and magnesium ions from wash water (water softening), Sodium Alkane Sulfonate provides primary cleaning power against heavy oils, Trideceth-9 emulsifies even at low temperatures, Sodium Metasilicate buffers the pH for consistent cleaning performance, and Sodium Polyacrylate keeps dissolved dirt particles in dispersion.

TUGA Chemie, based in Osnabrück, has been producing these formulations in Germany for decades, supplying commercial detailers, workshops, and ambitious private customers in the DACH region.

The mechanism of action proceeds in four phases. First, alkane sulfonates reduce the surface tension of the water — the solution completely wets the dirt. Second, the highly alkaline environment (buffered by sodium metasilicate) attacks the ester bonds of organic fats and breaks them down into water-soluble soaps and alcohols through saponification. Third, surfactants attach to the non-polar soot and oil particles, forming micelles that encapsulate the dirt. Fourth, polyacrylates and pyrophosphates prevent the re-agglomeration of micelles — the dirt is lifted and rinsed away without residue with clear water.

This architecture is specifically optimized for aliphatic hydrocarbons — engine oil splashes, chain grease, diesel soot, nicotine residue, brake fluid leaks. For purely inorganic contamination like limescale or rust, an acidic cleaner works better; Teufels-Reiniger is not the right tool here.

  • Dilutable up to 1:10 — the most economical option in the professional range. Ready-to-use in a 1-liter container (around 11 Euros), neat for extreme cases, 1:1 to 1:5 for medium industrial contamination, 1:10 for light all-purpose applications. A 5-liter canister, when diluted 1:10, yields 55 liters of application solution — costs per liter of application solution drop to around 60 cents.
  • Saponification instead of mechanical scrubbing. The high alkalinity (pH 10.5–11.8) chemically breaks down fat molecular chains — what requires hours of scrubbing with pH-neutral cleaners, Teufels-Reiniger dissolves in two to three minutes of contact time. On workshop floors with old oil deposits, machine frames with brake dust blackening, and engine bay aluminum with insect resin, this is the standard method.
  • €11 per liter in 1-liter container, €7 in 5-liter canister. Direct competitor Koch-Chemie Green Star (concentrate 1:30, ~€7-9/L) is cheaper per liter of concentrate, but requires an external mixing bottle. Sonax Profiline MultiStar (€12-20/L concentrate) is above that. GYEON Q²M APC (€14-25/L concentrate) is premium boutique. Soft99 Wash Mist (€36-46/L) is a cockpit specialist with antibacterial effect — not a heavy-duty competitor. Dr. Wack A1 (~€14-32/L) is a care detailer without brutal dissolving power.

Teufels-Reiniger Hero

Practical Tip from Detailing1: In our workshop, we see most APC spots due to exactly one mistake: Customers leave Teufels-Reiniger on for longer than 3 minutes, thinking "longer is better." The exact opposite is true — as soon as the water evaporates, metasilicates and pyrophosphates crystallize as a solid lye on the surface. These are the milky-white spots that suddenly appear in backlight and can only be remedied by machine paint correction with heavy-cut polish (cut factor 8/10 to 10/10 on a medium-hard microfiber cutting pad). A stopwatch is mandatory, not a gut feeling. Plus: On a 60-degree warm black hood, the 3-minute window shrinks to 30 seconds. Never work in the sun, always place the car in the shade — this is not optional, this is damage prevention.

Dilute, spray, wait three minutes, wipe or rinse.

The standard workflow begins with dilution — contrary to the RTU appearance of the 1-liter container, it is worthwhile to dilute the product for light and medium contamination. The rule of thumb: 1:1 for heavily greased engine compartment components and workshop floors, 1:5 for plastic trim and headliners, 1:10 for standard interior cleaning and door seals. Transfer to an empty spray bottle, fill with distilled or low-lime water, shake briefly.

The surface must be cool — never in direct sun, never on hot brake discs, never immediately after engine operation. In direct sunlight, move the vehicle or component to the shade. For workshop applications in summer, work on floor surfaces in the morning or evening when the concrete is cool.

Spray the cleaner evenly from a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters. For vertical surfaces, spray from bottom to top to avoid concentration gradients and streaks. Allow to act for three minutes — strictly no longer. For heavily encrusted areas (baked-on insect dirt, old nicotine film), agitate with a soft brush or microfiber pad during the contact time, without pressure.

Then rinse thoroughly or wipe with a damp microfiber cloth. For exterior use, neutralize thoroughly with clear water or a high-pressure cleaner. For interior use, a second, clean and slightly damp microfiber cloth is essential — alkaline surfactant residues must be removed, otherwise streaks will appear in the long term.

In a workshop context, Teufels-Reiniger is often the preparation phase for paint care. Anyone applying wax or sealant without prior degreasing will only loosely bind the care product — the durability will collapse. First Teufels-Reiniger in appropriate dilution, then pH-neutral car shampoo as a neutralization wash, then care.

Teufels-Reiniger Application

Engine bay, rims, and workshop floor yes. Genuine leather, Alcantara, and aluminum no.

Teufels-Reiniger is approved for painted bodywork surfaces (cold!), rims made of clear-coated aluminum or steel, engine bay plastics and rubbers, concrete workshop floor areas, tiled areas, machine frames with clear coat protection, truck tarpaulins, plastic garden furniture, and heavily greased kitchen surfaces. The official manufacturer's approval for industrial applications makes Teufels-Reiniger a crossover product between detailing and workshop supplies.

Four material groups are strictly excluded. First, genuine leather and Alcantara: The alkaline hydrolysis destroys the natural oils of the collagen fibers, leading to cracking and embrittlement in the long term. Use dedicated pH-neutral cleaners for leather — not the highly alkaline APC profile.

Second, unprotected or anodized aluminum: The strong alkalinity attacks the protective oxide layer, visible as dull or whitish spots. Polished aluminum rims without clear coat protection are taboo, as are aluminum trim strips on older vehicles without sealant.

Third, hot glass fabric and carbon-fiber-reinforced components: The surfactant solvents can dissolve resin adhesive bonds — maintain a safe distance or mask off carbon visible parts with damaged clear coat beforehand. Fourth, touchscreen displays with anti-reflective coating: The alkaline surfactants irreversibly attack the oleophobic coating.

An important practical observation: On newer VAG soft-touch surfaces (rubberized buttons and switches in Golf VI, Audi A4 B8 or older), the glycol ether content leads to swelling and a sticky finish. No problem with modern hard plastics, but test discreetly on soft-touch surfaces beforehand.

Teufels-Reiniger Result

Spring detailing, insect season, and the industrial use case.

Demand for all-purpose cleaners in the DACH market correlates strongly with the Central European weather cycle. The first peak is in spring detailing between March and May, when road salt corrosion on chassis and wheel arches, winter grime in the engine bay, and scattered grease deposits on workshop floors all need to be tackled simultaneously. The second peak is in early summer (May to July), when insect resin, pollen glue, and tree sap become the primary cleaning tasks — workshops and mobile detailers order 50 percent more in these weeks than in winter.

The 1-liter spray bottle for about 11 Euros is the convenient entry point for a private household vehicle with workshop needs — degreasing rims before sealing, cleaning the engine bay before care, immediately treating garage floors for oil stains. With quarterly use at 1:5 dilution, a 1-liter container lasts about two years.

The 5-liter canister for about 33 Euros saves about 35 percent per liter and is the standard size for workshops, mobile detailers, engine tuners, and larger private garages. With weekly workshop use, this is a three-to-six-month supply — at 1:10 dilution, the cost per liter of application solution is about 60 cents, a clear efficiency win over RTU competitors.

Off-label, Teufels-Reiniger has established itself as an industrial all-rounder. Manufacturer approval is officially given for truck tarpaulin cleaning, cement floors in warehouses, and machine components in metal processing — the high pyrophosphate concentration even tackles dried-on machine grease residue. In the detailing forum dasdetailingforum.de, it is regularly traded as a "secret workshop standard" that also covers DIY needs alongside car care.

Safety notice: The product is classified as eye irritant (H319). Always wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves during application. The VOC content is marginal as a water-based product — ventilation in enclosed spaces is recommended, but no professional extraction is required. Proper disposal is via AVV waste codes for alkaline lyes — not through household waste or normal wastewater. In case of skin contact, rinse thoroughly with water immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions about Teufels-Reiniger All-Purpose Cleaner

What is Teufels-Reiniger and what is it used for?

Teufels-Reiniger is a highly alkaline all-purpose cleaner from TUGA Chemie (pH 10.5-11.8) based on tetrapotassium pyrophosphate — the sledgehammer for engine oil, chain grease, nicotine film, and diesel soot. Sodium alkane sulfonate provides heavy-duty cleaning power, and sodium metasilicate buffers the pH value. Dilutable up to 1:10.

How do I use Teufels-Reiniger correctly?

Dilute the concentrate appropriately — 1:5 engine bay, 1:10 workshop, 1:20 interior, 1:30 maintenance. Transfer to a spray bottle with distilled water. Spray onto a COOL surface from 20-30 cm. Leave on STRICTLY for 3 minutes — longer will destroy clear coat due to APC spots. Remove residue-free with high pressure or a damp cloth.

What is the difference between Teufels-Reiniger and Koch-Chemie Green Star?

Both are highly alkaline concentrates. Koch-Chemie Green Star (pH 12.5, ~€7-9/L) is cheaper per liter of concentrate and more dilutable (up to 1:30). Teufels-Reiniger (pH 10.5-11.8, ~€11/L) can be used ready-to-use in the 1-L format and is more accessible to end-users — Green Star requires an external mixing bottle and is more B2B-oriented.

Is Teufels-Reiniger suitable for aluminum rims?

Clear-coated aluminum rims are safe, provided the dilution is at least 1:10 and the clear coat is intact. Anodized aluminum components (anodized layer will be attacked) and uncoated aluminum are strictly excluded. For rims, the dedicated acid-free Alu-Teufel Spezial Grün is the right choice.

What happens if Teufels-Reiniger dries on?

The contained metasilicates and pyrophosphates crystallize on the surface and chemically bind to the micropores — so-called APC spots appear, which are milky-white stains or irreversible etching in the clear coat. Neutralization is NO longer sufficient — minimally invasive paint correction with heavy-cut polish (cut factor 8/10 to 10/10) is the only solution.

How economical is Teufels-Reiniger?

In a 5-L canister with a 1:10 dilution, the cleaner yields 55 liters of application solution — the price per liter of final solution is around 65 cents. With quarterly use at 1:5 dilution, a 1-L container lasts about two years. For workshop use with weekly consumption, the 5-L canister is clearly more economical.

Application of Teufels-Reiniger Universal Cleaner

Dilution appropriate to the task — strictly 3 minutes dwell time

Teufels-Reiniger is explicitly a concentrate — pure application only for extreme industrial soiling such as burnt-on machine grease residue on workshop steel benches. Rule of thumb for dilution: 1:5 for heavily greased engine compartment components, 1:10 for workshop floors and heavily soiled plastics, 1:20 for standard interior cleaning, 1:30 for light maintenance on upholstery and furniture.

Pour into a ready-to-spray empty bottle, fill with distilled or low-lime water, and shake briefly. The surface must be cool — never in direct sunlight, never on hot brake discs, never directly after engine run on a hot engine block.

Spray the diluted cleaner evenly from a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters — on vertical surfaces from bottom to top to avoid concentration gradients. Let it dwell strictly for three minutes, never longer. For heavily encrusted areas, agitate with a soft brush or microfiber pad during the dwell time, without extreme pressure.

Then rinse thoroughly without residue or wipe with a damp microfiber cloth — the alkaline surfactant residues must be completely removed, otherwise long-term corrosion will occur. For interior use, a second, clean and slightly damp microfiber cloth is mandatory.

Notes: Strictly excluded for genuine leather, Alcantara, unprotected or anodized aluminum, hot glass fabric, and touchscreen displays. For "APC spots" (drying corrosion), only mechanical paint correction with heavy-cut polish is the solution — neutralization is not sufficient. Safety glasses and nitrile gloves are mandatory during application (H319 eye irritant). Proper disposal is via AVV waste codes for alkaline lyes, never in household waste or normal sewage systems.
