What is the TUGA Chemie wash mitt? A microfibre wash mitt made from 95 percent polyester and 5 percent polyamide with an internal seam, built as the tool that goes with Shampoo-Teufel. Not for wheels, sills or dry paint.
TUGA Chemie wash mitt (microfibre) for "Shampoo-Teufel" is a hand-wash tool from TUGA Chemie GmbH in Osnabrück. Its microfibre pile pulls loosened dirt away from the paint and carries it deep into the material. The 95 percent polyester and 5 percent polyamide blend is built to hold its shape over many machine washes, and the internal seam keeps hard edges off the clear coat.
Microfibre doesn't clean because it's soft. It cleans because the fibres are split lengthwise during manufacturing, turning one thread into many fine wedge-shaped segments. Those wedges slide under the dirt film and pull it inwards by capillary action. What that means for you: anything that drops between the fibres stops touching the surface, as long as you keep rinsing the mitt.
The 95 percent polyester share places this mitt honestly on the scale. Polyester brings structure and abrasion resistance, polyamide brings softness and water uptake. Detailing mostly runs on 80/20 and 70/30 blends, which soak up more and feel plusher. The TUGA mitt sits at the hard-wearing end of that scale, not the cuddly one.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: What we see day-to-day is that the biggest mistake isn't which mitt you pick, it's how often it goes back into the rinse bucket. Detailing forums put the normal figure somewhere between 20 and 30 rinses over one car. Rinse three or four times and from the second panel on you're dragging the grit you just picked up back across the paint. The scratch tests floating around show the same thing on the other variable: the very same microfibre leaves visible marks on dry paint and almost none on wet, foamed paint. It isn't the material that decides, it's water and frequency.
You soak the mitt in shampoo solution, pull it in straight lines across paint that is already wet, and rinse it in clean water after every panel. That's the whole routine.
Before the mitt touches anything there's a contact-free round. Rinse, lay down pre-cleaner or foam, let it dwell, rinse again. What's left clinging to the paint after that is a fraction of what sat there before — and everything you take off at this stage is something the mitt never has to carry across the surface.
Then you work two buckets. One holds the shampoo solution, the other clean water only. The pH-neutral car shampoo this mitt was built around goes in at four to five cap-fulls per ten litres. Its lubricating film is the real scratch protection. It keeps particles in suspension instead of trapping them between fibre and clear coat.
Lukewarm water lifts dirt and shampoo better than ice-cold; it doesn't need to be hot. In winter the weight shifts to the pre-wash anyway: road salt, sand and grit are the most abrasive stuff that lands on paint all year. You never break winter crust with the mitt, you break it with water and time.
Wash top to bottom, because the dirt gets coarser the lower you go. Roof, glass, bonnet and bootlid first, then the upper halves of the doors, bumpers and sills last. Within a panel you pull straight lines in the direction of travel. Circular motions are what produce those round spider webs that jump out in low sun.
You need no pressure at all. The dead weight of a soaked mitt is contact pressure enough. Push down instead and you flatten the pile, shrink the storage space and bring the particles back to the paint. And one rule with no exceptions: a mitt that hits the floor is done for that car.
The wash mitt belongs on painted surfaces, glass and plastic. For wheels, sills and dried-on winter grime it is the wrong tool, and each for its own reason.
Brake dust carries metallic, sharp-edged particles. A mitt that has been round a wheel barrel carries that cargo in its pile even when it looks clean — and hands it back on the next pull across the bonnet. There's dedicated kit for that: a wheel mitt is cut narrower to reach between spokes and never sees paint at all. Same goes for the bottom thirty centimetres of the body, where road sand, salt and grit sit.
It works no better dry. On dusty paint without a water film it turns into an abrasive, because every grain sits directly between fibre and clear coat. And against baked-on bug splatter or tree sap no mitt beats the bond — those spots get dwell time first, or you end up leaning harder and cutting exactly the scratches you set out to avoid.
Two honest limits on the product itself. TUGA publishes no GSM figure for this mitt, so no number for its weight per square metre, and without it you can't line the storage volume up against models that quote 640, 1250 or 1800 GSM. And the 95 to 5 blend is built for durability, not for maximum plushness. If you're after the softest possible material for black or freshly polished paint, you'll find it in lambswool or in the long-pile premium mitts.
One expectation is worth setting straight before the first wash. AUTO BILD's 2026 wash mitt test pulled nine models under an 800-gram weight across a black acrylic panel dusted with half a teaspoon of quartz sand. The result across the whole field: even the good ones leave marks under those conditions. A wash mitt isn't a shield, it's the lowest-risk tool available — provided the coarse grit was rinsed off first.
This mitt fits if you wash by hand on a regular basis and want a tool that survives plenty of machine washes rather than one that loses its shape after a season.
At 16 × 23 cm and around 120 grams it's compact. Around swage lines, mirror bases and door handles that's an advantage. With big hands, or washing in winter with gloves underneath, it's the point where a larger model suits you better. Common comparison sizes sit at 26 × 21 cm.

Demand for wash mitts in Germany has followed the same pattern for five years running: August is the strongest month, December the weakest, and right now interest sits about 16 percent above the twelve-month average. Restock in late summer and you're bang in the window where pollen and bug splatter make hand washing necessary most often.
And the thing that decides how long it lasts happens after the wash, not during it. Rinse the mitt under clean water after the last panel until no more suds come out, squeeze it and hang it up open. Put it away wet and full of leftover grit in an empty bucket instead, and it dries there squashed flat with the sand locked between the fibres. Next time out it isn't a wash tool any more, it's sandpaper with a cuff.
